The Marriage of Figaro

By Pierre de Beaumarchais

Directed and Translated by John Johnston

April 15 through May 3, 2020

Classical Theatre Company returns to the great French playwright Pierre Augustin de Beaumarchais with the local professional premiere The Marriage of Figaro. Their previous production by the French master was 2017’s smash hit, The Barber of Seville. As with that critically acclaimed production, Executive Artistic Director John Johnston will not only direct, but translate the play as well.

The Marriage of Figaro is a direct sequel to Barber, and continues to follow the mischievous exploits of the rascally Figaro as he works in service to his conniving master, Count Almaviva. Taking place three years after the events in Barber, Figaro is engaged to be married to a fellow servant, the alluring Suzanne. Unfortunately for him, his master the Count has a wandering eye and has designs on Suzanne, much to the chagrin of the Countess Rosine. Plots and counterplots will keep audiences rolling in the aisles with this riotous farce.

“I’m thrilled to be able to return to Beaumarchis. As the second play in the Figaro trilogy of plays, I really think this is a gem,” says Johnston. “And to be able to bring the local premiere of The Marriage of Figaro to our audiences is tremendous. Everyone has heard of the opera, but this is the chance to see the play that inspired Mozart to write it.”
